It started with a simple idea: What if students could make a real difference while learning how to lead and create lasting change? This past winter, a group of motivated high school students traveled to Hunan, China, not just to visit—but to immerse themselves in a world of possibilities, challenges, and growth. What they found was more than they expected.
From empowering local farmers with microfinance strategies to experiencing rural life firsthand, the Hunan Winter Exploration Program became a story of leadership, discovery, and community impact.
Highlights of the Hunan Winter Program
In collaboration with Hunan University, students traveled to the renowned Shibadong Village, a model for poverty alleviation and rural development. This immersive experience allowed them to connect deeply with local communities, gaining firsthand insights into microfinance initiatives and sustainable growth strategies.
Cultural Immersion at a Historic Academy
Students began their journey with a visit to a centuries-old academy, where they walked the same paths as scholars from long ago. Through guided tours and hands-on activities, they learned about the academy’s role in shaping regional culture and the values of education and community service. The serene environment allowed them to reflect on the power of learning and the importance of preserving cultural heritage. Many students found inspiration in the academy’s teachings, sparking new ideas for their leadership journeys.


Gathering Insights: Interviews with Local Farmers
Armed with curiosity and notebooks, students spent hours engaging with local farmers in Shibadong Village. They listened to personal stories of resilience, learned about innovative farming techniques, and explored how access to microfinance had changed lives. The data they collected provided valuable insights for their business plans, helping them develop practical solutions. These interviews were more than just data collection—they were moments of empathy and connection that deepened their understanding of rural economies and social impact.

Team Challenges & Reflection
Leadership was not just taught—it was experienced through hands-on team challenges. Whether solving complex puzzles or navigating outdoor activities, students had to rely on each other’s strengths to succeed. Evening reflection sessions provided space for them to analyze their decisions, celebrate their achievements, and learn from mistakes. These moments of honest reflection were transformative, building trust and camaraderie within the group.


Innovating for Rural Development: Creating Business Solutions
Focusing on Shibadong’s six key industries, students proposed innovative sales strategies to help bring local products to broader markets. They introduced ideas like livestreaming, express delivery, community-based marketing, and inter-village cooperation. For villagers with entrepreneurial ambitions, student representatives provided personalized business plans and technical support, connecting them with platforms that could elevate their businesses. These efforts aimed to help more households achieve financial stability, contributing to the collective goal of a better future for all.
