Summer 2025 Session I

This summer, IvyMax students embarked on a life-changing journey to Costa Rica, where they worked on sustainability and marine conservation through hands-on service. Through teamwork and field research, they not only protected vulnerable species but also deepened their understanding of global responsibility.

Summer With Care and Compassion

Students dove straight into impactful volunteer work at the Animal Rescue Center. They cleaned enclosures, prepared colorful fruit-and-seed meals, and carefully fed toucans, parrots, and other rescued wildlife. Some painted cheerful murals on the walls—small gestures that brought warmth to the space. Every task, from cutting papayas to designing animal enrichment, carried purpose. It was an immediate lesson in compassion, responsibility, and what it means to care for another life. A meaningful start to a summer of connection—with nature, with animals, and with each other.

Protecting the Shore for New Life

Despite the rain, our students worked hand-in-hand to remove driftwood and plastic waste from the beach, clearing the path for sea turtle hatchlings soon to emerge. Wearing ponchos and gloves, they collected debris, lifted heavy logs, and organized the shore with great care. This wasn’t just a cleanup—it was a powerful act of environmental stewardship and teamwork. Their efforts contribute directly to the sustainable protection of marine ecosystems and support Costa Rica’s vital sea turtle nesting season. Through collaboration and dedication, they made a real impact on the future of local wildlife.

A Front-Row Seat to New Life

At Estación Las Tortugas, students assisted in maintaining turtle hatcheries, carefully relocating nests to safer sites and ensuring optimal conditions for hatching. They observed baby turtles emerging and beginning their journey to the ocean—a powerful moment of connection. Through expert discussions, students compared regional conservation strategies and learned about the challenges different turtle populations face. From monitoring data to redesigning hatchery layouts, each action revealed how thoughtful, place-based solutions can help protect a species on the edge.

More Than a Trip — A Shared Commitment

As Session I draws to a close, students leave Costa Rica not just with memories, but with purpose. Every muddy boot, early morning, and data point became part of a shared mission—protecting life, respecting ecosystems, and learning through action. This journey fostered curiosity, resilience, and compassion, igniting a deeper awareness of global challenges. It’s a beginning, not an end. As we look ahead to Session II, we carry forward the momentum of meaningful work—and the belief that every action, no matter how small, can spark lasting change.
