The UCI Autonomous Driving Summer Camp, hosted by Franklin Education Foundation, is a two-week STEM program in collaboration with UCI’s Samueli School of Engineering. Adapted from a university course, it offers Grades 10-12 students hands-on experience in autonomous driving, AI programming, and mechanical engineering with UCI professors and graduate mentors. Students will design, build, and program an autonomous rover, gaining practical skills in robotics, artificial intelligence, and automotive technology inside UCI’s engineering labs.
Session Date
July 20 – August 2, 2025
Bridging High School & College-Level STEM – This program is based on an upper-division UCI engineering course, providing an authentic university learning experience for younger students.
Hands-On Innovation in AI & Robotics – Students build and program autonomous rovers, integrating infrared sensors, automation algorithms, and AI decision-making.
Pathway to STEM Careers – This program provides early exposure to AI, machine learning, and engineering, helping students develop the problem-solving mindset needed for top STEM universities and careers.

Hear directly from our students about their experiences with our programs and how these opportunities have positively influenced their academic journeys.
“I always thought engineering was just about math and formulas, but this camp showed me the creative side of problem-solving. Designing, coding, and testing our autonomous vehicles made me realize how many real-world challenges AI can solve. The professors at UCI treated us like real engineering students, and the hands-on projects gave me confidence that I can thrive in this field. I walked away from this experience knowing that STEM is the right path for me.”
“Before this camp, I had only read about AI and self-driving cars, but I had no idea how they actually worked. Learning directly from UCI professors and working inside real engineering labs made everything click. The best part was when I finally got my autonomous rover to navigate obstacles on its own—it felt like magic, but it was just AI and programming coming to life!”
“Going into this program, I was a bit intimidated because I had no prior experience with robotics. But by the second day, I was already coding in Arduino, learning Onshape for 3D modeling, and working with my team to design an autonomous rover. What really stood out was how supportive and hands-on the professors and graduate mentors were. “
