F = MA

overview

IvyMax is proud to host the prestigious F=MA contest, organized by the Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). This competition, focused on classical mechanics, challenges students to showcase their understanding and problem-solving skills. Participants from across the U.S. compete for a chance to advance to the USA Physics Olympiad (USAPhO).

Exam Duration:

75 minutes

Exam Format:

25 multiple-choice questions

Eligibility and Benefits

The F=ma competition is specifically designed for U.S. middle and high school students who show a keen interest in physics and STEM fields, providing a platform to showcase and enhance their physics acumen.

  • Encourages participants to delve deeper into the academic study of physics.
  • Enhances problem-solving skills that are crucial for academic success in STEM fields.
  • Participation underscores a student’s commitment to academic excellence in science, boosting their profile for college admissions and scholarships.

Key Reasons to Participate

The F=MA contest offers exceptional value and opportunities for high school students passionate about physics. Here are three compelling reasons why participating in F=MA is a smart choice:

  • Unlike other competitions like AMC and Physics Bowl, which have high cut-off scores due to increasing participation, F=MA is exclusively for U.S. citizens and students attending U.S. schools.
  • F=MA serves as a stepping stone to the USAPhO (USA Physics Olympiad). Performing well in F=MA enhances your college application by demonstrating your commitment and skill in physics.
  • F=MA encompasses the entire AP Physics 1 and AP Physics C: Mechanics curricula. In fact, it covers more material and presents a greater challenge than the AP exams, with AP topics forming only 50-60% of the F=MA content.

Study Resources and Strategies

This exam tests knowledge across various domains of physics, placing a strong emphasis on mechanics, while also covering electromagnetism, thermodynamics, and more, without the use of calculus.

  • Offers a broad spectrum of questions that reflect high school physics curriculum standards.
  • Two versions of the exam, F=ma A and F=ma B, provide students with multiple opportunities to qualify for the next round.
  • Focuses on practical problem-solving and theoretical applications, essential for advanced studies in physics.
