What is AIME?

The AIME (American Invitational Mathematics Examination) is the first major step towards eligibility for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). This prestigious exam is designed to identify talented students and serve as a foundation for advanced mathematical competitions.

  • AMC 10 Qualification:

The AIME questions become progressively more challenging throughout the exam. Early questions are relatively simpler, allowing students to gain momentum, while later questions require more advanced problem-solving skills and mathematical insight.

  • AMC 12 Qualification: The AIME uses a unique format where students must provide exact integer answers between 0 and 999. There are no multiple-choice questions. Students are not penalized for incorrect answers; they receive points only for correct responses.

How to Qualify for AIME

For students to be eligible for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME), they must first perform exceptionally well in either the AMC 10 or AMC 12 competitions. The specific requirements for qualifying for the AIME are as follows:

  • AMC 10 Qualification: Students in 10th grade or below who score 120 or more out of 150 points, or who are in the top 2.5% of all AMC 10 participants, are eligible for the AIME. This criterion ensures that younger students are well-prepared for the AIME’s challenges.

  • AMC 12 Qualification: Students in 12th grade or below who achieve a score of 100 or more out of 150 points, or who are in the top 5% of all AMC 12 participants, qualify for the AIME. This threshold reflects the advanced nature of high school mathematics and prepares students for further academic challenges.

AIME Qualification Adjustments

In 2011, modifications were implemented to the qualification criteria of the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) to better adapt to variations in exam difficulty levels and to make the competition more accessible. From the 2012 contests onwards:

  • AMC 10: The qualification criteria expanded to include students scoring at least 120 points or ranking in the top 2.5%, replacing the previous threshold of 1% or 120 points established in 2004.
  • AMC 12: The standards remained consistent, qualifying students who scored at least 100 points or were in the top 5%, a practice unchanged since 2000.
