Lab on Chip
Course Overview
The Lab on Chip Summer School is an interdisciplinary STEM program designed for high school students interested in engineering and applied sciences. Developed in partnership with the UC Irvine School of Engineering, the program introduces students to the foundations of lab on chip systems, materials science, chemical engineering, and bioengineering.
Session Date
7/19/2026 – 8/1/2026
The Lab on Chip Summer School introduces students to interdisciplinary engineering where biology, chemistry, and micro-scale chip systems intersect. The program combines foundational concepts with applied design experience in a structured, project-based format.
Students explore how biological and chemical processes can be integrated into compact chip-based systems.
Students gain introductory exposure to materials science and microfluidic principles.
Students learn basic engineering design logic and structured problem-solving methods.
Students complete a guided capstone project that integrates the concepts covered throughout the program.
What Students Will Gain

Micro-scale chip technologies are central to modern innovation. Lab on chip systems miniaturize laboratory processes onto compact devices that can perform analysis, testing, and chemical reactions efficiently.
This technology plays a growing role in biomedical diagnostics, wearable health devices, environmental testing, and advanced research platforms. As industries continue to invest in semiconductor and micro-engineering development, interdisciplinary chip-based systems remain an important area of technological growth.
Early exposure to lab on chip concepts helps students understand how mathematics, materials science, chemistry, and engineering integrate within emerging technology sectors.
Why Lab on Chip Matters Today
Lab on Chip (LOC) technology integrates biological and chemical laboratory functions onto small micro-scale devices. These systems are designed to perform testing, analysis, and reactions on compact chips rather than in large laboratory setups.
Lab on Chip applications are commonly used in biomedical diagnostics, drug screening, environmental testing, and advanced materials research. The field combines principles from chemistry, biology, materials science, and engineering.
While Lab on Chip research at the university level can be highly technical, introductory concepts can be presented in an accessible format for motivated high school students.
This summer school focuses on foundational principles, design logic, and structured project work rather than advanced fabrication techniques. An algebra-level mathematics background is sufficient preparation.
Lab on Chip systems are relevant to multiple engineering and scientific pathways, including:
Biomedical Engineering
Chemical Engineering
Materials Science
Microfluidics
Nanotechnology
Medical Device Development
As micro-scale and semiconductor technologies continue to evolve, interdisciplinary chip-based systems remain an active area of innovation.
Unlike broad STEM camps that rotate across multiple topics, the Lab on Chip Summer School concentrates on one focused interdisciplinary area.
Participants follow a structured learning progression that includes engineering design principles, CAD exposure, and a capstone project. The format mirrors a university-style project-based learning model rather than activity-based enrichment.
