At the core of this year\u2019s UCI camp was an ambitious challenge: build a fully functional autonomous rover from scratch. Over two weeks, they applied real-world engineering processes to bring their ideas to life. From wiring circuits to 3D-printing structural parts, soldering boards, and calibrating motors, campers turned basic hardware into a sophisticated line-tracking robot. Once the physical builds were complete, students shifted to one of the most intellectually demanding phases of the project: programming autonomous behavior. Using Arduino C++, students wrote control logic that enabled their rover to detect and follow a winding black line on the floor\u2014replicating how self-driving rovers stay in lane. Through sensor tuning, proportional speed control, and logic optimization, campers learned how small decisions in code affect real-world performance. Debugging was an essential part of this phase, and students faced real-time challenges\u2014from inconsistent sensor feedback to curve overshooting.
